What is preventative dentistry?
Preventative dentistry is simply ensuring you have regular check-ups at the dentist to keep your teeth healthy. Regular visits to the dentist help avoid tooth decay, cavities, gum disease and more. In Australia 3 in 10 adults aged between 25 and 44 have untreated tooth decay. Many dental issues go untreated on account of the cost of the appointment. Preventative dental for kids ensures regular check-ups from a young age so they don’t have to pay costly dental fees later in life.
Taking care of your kid’s teeth at home
Frequent visits to the dentist are important, but there are plenty of things you can do at home to help protect your children’s teeth.
Brush their teeth daily
Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, morning and night. We recommend using toothpaste with fluoride. Fluoride is absorbed by the teeth and helps repair them by restoring lost minerals. It’s a natural mineral that’s been used in our water supply for decades. In recent years, however, more holistic dentists have been against the use of fluoride toothpastes saying it can have dangerous side effects of overdosing on sodium fluoride. If you’re concerned about using fluoride toothpaste, speak to your dentist who will be able to give you proper advice around what toothpaste you should use.
Floss daily
Flossing helps reach the areas in between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t. Flossing is important, particularly if you have braces. Visit your dentist to get tips and advice on the best way to floss.
A healthy diet
Vitamins and nutrients are important for oral health. Try and avoid sugary or starchy foods at home and encourage your kids to drink as much water as they can throughout the day.
Preventative dentistry can prevent cavities, gingivitis, enamel loss, periodontitis and more. It’s recommended that preventative dentistry starts at a young age so that, by adulthood, your children are wise and diligent with their oral health.
